Scary close call & warning

We consider ourselves fairly meticulous when it comes to safety and appliance upkeep: we clean the lint out of our gas dryer at every use, do all scheduled maintenance, etc. So I was shocked when I smelled smoke while doing laundry and found out that the inside of the dryer had caught fire. We were extremely lucky that we caught it so soon and the only consequence was that we had to buy a new dryer (the old one was quite old anyway). It could have been so much worse! Apparently, the hard winter did a number on our outside dryer vent - something that never occurred to us. So, please - if you have a gas dryer, carefully check all the vents, even if you think they should be fine. This is apparently the leading cause of house fires.
