With such a build-up . . .
Apr. 20th, 2006 09:40 amthe actual concert could have been a disappointment. However, the reality met all expectations and more.
The owner of the Winchester came through and did save us the very best table in the house (right in front, on the same level as the group, about 2 feet away - Being on the same level and so close made the whole thing feel very intimate). The owner insisted that he was older than I was, and it turned out that he was 40 (of course, that was blarney, but it was fun anyway). Also, when we walked into the Tavern we saw the group who had seen our sign at Coventy - they recognized us, so we knew that our signage had paid off.
Girlyman was great! They were in fine form with their banter (which is my favorite part of concerts). Their banter ranged from which Muppet would be the best replacement for Doris to the ingredients of Hostess Snow Balls - Very loose and very fun. Zan and I shouted out Happy Birthday to Nate at the 2nd most opportune moment, which got a good reaction. They sang all their new songs, plus we got 2 silly songs. It was good to have Jared and Maggie with us - Jared, as an experienced groupie, filled us in on details we were clueless about and Maggie reminded us to grab a set list after they had left. Plus they are just plain fun to have around. There was lots of audience participation and eye contact from the group, and tons of good-natured teasing between group members. After the concert, we got CDs signed, pictures taken, Zan gave Nate his birthday present. All in all, I can't think of any way it could have been better.
And, no, I don't plan to be depressed that it's all over - after all, we can always look forward to next time.
