or my body is sore for absolutely nothing.
Evidence for the forces of the universe converging:
1. I've been having trouble getting wholeheartedly into my exercise program since Sept. I still do my long walks, and the doctor is happy with my progress, but I know I could do a lot more.
2. DDR lost its memory, so I have to start all over unlocking the songs I was working on. Which means my system was messed up, so I went a while without doing DDR, so now I'm totally lousy at it. Which means it is discouraging and not as much fun.
3. J's gym closed out of the blue so he had to join a new gym to be able to play racketball.
4. This new gym is right near our office, so that my major excuse for exercising at home ("I save the time of driving there and back") is basically eliminated.
5. If I add onto his new gym membership, it still costs less than his old gym did.
6. By cutting down and (hopefully) soon not needing blood pressure meds, I'm saving more money than the gym membership costs.
Having successfully avoided exercising at a gym for many years, I begrudgingly signed up for a 2-week free trial membership, just to try things out. My first visit (which happened to be in the evening) confirmed what I had always hated about gyms: it was packed, there was no room for me, and the class was booooring.
My next visit (during the day) was actually a pleasant surprise: What I really like is that there is real diversity there. Not just 21-year-old gorgeous bimbos at all! There is incredible racial, age, weight, and fitness diversity! Which means that I wasn't the oldest or the youngest, the fattest or the thinest, the most or the least fit. It was actually inspiring to see so many older people who were very fit (as well as many who were not). The classes were small enough (since it was daytime) that the teacher knew most of the people by name, could make corrections and suggestions, and people were friendly and welcoming. I did an aerobics class which was challenging but not intimidating, took a break, then did a Pilates class. My body is definitely telling me that I overdid it for the first day, but it feels like a good kind of "macho" ache.
I have no intention of giving up my 2 to 4 miles of walking per day, or my DDR - but I do wonder if I was meant to add something more (or if I'm being stupidly optimistic about my ability to follow through on something like this). I don't plan to rush into anything. I'll use my entire 2-week free pass (avoiding further overdoing) and see.
