I could swear that I posted yesterday, but lj seems to have eaten it - So, if some of this is a repeat, oh well . . .

Sayo arrived from Takatori High School in Japan on Saturday night. Everyone was excited to be here but very tired. They were still happy to be here even when they found out that their suitcases had not arrived. We basically just said hello, drove home, borrowed a pair of S's pajamas for Sayo, and went to sleep.

Sunday we went shopping (since Sayo's eyes lit up when we asked if that was what she wanted to do). We went to a very large mall and she spent a lot of time carefully scrutinizing clothes without buying much of anything. She decided she wanted to buy a purse, but the only one she liked (so far) was $200 and clearly out of her price range. We had lunch at Johnny Rockets (which none of us had ever been to before) which was a fun, 1950's diner-style restaurant. The burgers, shakes and fries seemed like a classic American meal. We were all surprised when the wait-staff broke into a full-dance rendition of "Staying Alive" (70's rather than 50's, but who's counting). We had to assure Sayo that this is not typical in American restaurants. She was exhausted after lunch, so we came home and she had a long nap. Her suitcase had arrived, which was a big relief.

S finally arrived after her big Latin Convention. Her school and team did fantastic! Her team took 2nd place in the State and the 8th graders took 1st place. She placed in every event she participated in besides 2, which added up to a lot of ribbons and tons of fun. She even sang during Open Mike! I'm very proud of her (just as much for being social as for the academics).

We had a quiet evening opening wonderful gifts with Sayo. I think we hit it right with her gift, since she screamed with delight when she opened her cute red, white and blue sequined purse. She taught S to do various types of Origami and we listened to her favorite music (actually quite good). We all went to bed on the early side, since Sayo had to catch a bus to Washington, DC at 4:45 the next morning.

All in all, a very satisfying weekend!
